Objection
Consciousness and morality might just be "spandrels"—non-adaptive byproducts of evolution with no real functional utility.
This is un-parsimonious and ignores diachronic reality. Natural selection relentlessly prunes energy-intensive traits that lack utility; the Nous is the most metabolically costly system in the body. To claim our primary navigational instrument is a functionless accident ignores the mountain of evidence showing its design for solving complex problems across time.
